Patriot or Not Patriot?

In my half-century plus, I’ve been privileged to have visited forty-seven states and eight foreign countries. Most of my travels have been as a member of the United States Air Force, even if the travel was during times of leave. I have seen the beauty and poverty of much of America and of the foreign countries I’ve traveled. As well, I have seen the good and bad, the love and hate, the young and the old, the proud and the shameful.

Most importantly, all across America, I’ve seen a genuine love and support for this country and for the brave men and women in uniform who keep them free. The vast majority of Americans are true patriots and are willing to do whatever is necessary to make sure the good old USA lives on as the land of the free and the home of the brave. The vast majority wants what’s best for America. Unfortunately, the vast majority aren’t in power.

Speaking of power, what’s happened to our Congress? What’s happened with uniting for the betterment of the country rather than for the betterment of the party? What’s happened to rallying behind the Commander in Chief to win the battle at hand? What’s happened is that many of the honorable men and women on Capitol Hill are so selfish that they are no longer capable of displaying any inkling of patriotism. Many of them are so egocentric that they are willing to take the chance of ruining America in order to gain more power. These people are anti-American, unpatriotic, and extremely dangerous.

I never thought I’d live to see the day when the Senate Majority Leader would stand before a camera and declare that we have lost a war that we’re still fully involved in. Just the idea of sending such a defeating message to those who are doing their best to secure a safe homeland for the 25 million recently freed people of Iraq, borders on treason. Senator Reid does not deserve the position of Majority Leader, nor does he deserve to be a United States Senator. He should, for the sake of us all, resign and go home.

And I never thought I’d live to see the day when the Speaker of the House of Representatives would openly defy the President and meet with known terrorists’ supporters and America haters. Then, upon her return, she declared that she would like to visit Iran and meet with the man who wants Israel wiped off the face of the earth. She does not deserve her position, nor does she deserve to represent her district. And, she does not have the right to intervene for the Secretary of State regardless of what she thinks of the person holding that position or the political party she belongs to.

An ex-Marine in the House feels that it’s the job of Congress to tell the troops what to do. According to the Constitution, that duty lies with the President.

The good Senator from Maine feels she has the right to tell the oil industry how to spend its money while several other Senators are shoving the unproven theory of global warming down our throats. And then there’s the ever-exciting, never-ending, something-new-every-day race for the White House that started way too early.

It’s just not the way it should be. There’s far too much anti-American, anti-family, and anti-Christian animus on the Hill. Far too many of our Senators and Representatives have lost their sense of duty, God and country and are pushing their private and, in many ways, pitiful agendas. And they’re doing it in spite of what’s best for America, and in spit of the feelings and beliefs of those who voted them into office. It’s an abuse of their positions and an abuse of power. And it’s abusing America.

What’s really sad is that the voices being raised in opposition of these abusers can barely be heard. Where are the good Democrats and Republicans who love this country and our military enough to stand up for them? Why isn’t there outrage over Senator Reid’s comments and Speaker Pelosi’s anti-American actions? Where are the men and women who should be rallying around the President? Where are the patriots?

Have we, as Americans, forgotten what a true patriot really is? Have we lost the will to stand and fight against those who would just as soon see this country go down the tubes rather than compromise? I ask again; where are the patriots?

A patriot is a person who believes in and supports his or her country. A patriot supports the President and the military, and wants only the best for the entire country. A patriot is willing to put aside his or her wants and desires in order for the country to survive and succeed. A patriot is willing to die for his or her country.

I am a patriot. Unfortunately for America, I’m not in charge.

We Must Support America

From around the world I hear the cries

Of those who’ve sacrificed their lives

For the freedom that we take for granted

For the freedom we’re abusing

Those crying out shout loud and clear

To all who care to lend an ear

“Don’t negate the sacrifice we made.

It was of our own choosing.”

No death should ever be in vain

As long as freedom still remains

Their fight is for our right to breathe

Free air in freedom’s land

We have no right to demoralize

Those on the ground or in the skies

As long as God is at the front

The enemy won’t stand

We must support the freedom crew

Who fight behind red, white and blue

We must support America

Lest freedom flee away

We must support the cause of right

And pray for all who take up the fight

We must support America

Don’t let it slip away

The Red, White and Blue

There was a time

When the red, white, and blue

Was a glory to behold

A beacon on a hill

A sight for sore eyes

It still is for me

But for some

It’s an eyesore

A symbol of intolerance

An emblem of oppression

And they claim to be Americans

I think not.

For true Americans believe

In the red, white and blue

And are thankful

Those colors don’t run

Or fade

Or cower in the night

For the red, white and blue

Is the symbol of liberty

That many have died for

That we may live unfettered

Independent

Self-governing

And free

Yet, some forget the sacrifice

Of those who fought

And those who died

Defending our freedom

Securing our future

Denying themselves

For freedom’s cause

Some desecrate Old Glory

And call it artistic freedom

While others deny

Its right to fly

For fear of offending

A non-American neighbor

While others think freedom

Means burning Old Glory

Or trampling underfoot

This symbol of good

Not I

‘Tis wrong to degrade

Or burn

Or deface

Or in any way change

The red, white and blue

And if you do

You’re not a true American

Still you are free

To disrespect, if you wish

This symbol of blood

And good

And right

In your own selfish manner

But, I won’t

For I love this flag

Old Glory

The red, white and blue

And you should, too

For the red, white and blue

Tolerates much

Oppresses none

Liberates all

The red, white and blue

Justifies truth

Promotes the common good

Lifts up the name of God

The red, white and blue

Flies proudly

Waves honorably

Needs no introduction

I salute the red, white and blue

Will you salute, too?
